Peter was our driver today with 9 passengers leaving Havelock North at 8.a.m. It was an overcast day with a small amount of rain on the way to Sunrise carpark. We gathered at Triplex hut and set off up the Sunrise track in warm humid conditions. After an hour we arrived at the track going down to the Waipawa river.
At the saddle we are divided into 2 groups . One for the river walk and one to return down Sunrise track to the Swamp track. It took 45 minutes down to the river on a track that was steep but dry. The river was average flow for summer but the build-up of shingle from a year ago was evident.
Lunch was had in the recently renovated Waipawa Forks Hut before making several crossings down the river. After one hour we were met by the other party coming up the riverbed to meet us. Together we walked the Swamp track which is always appealing to the eye.
An easy day enjoyed by us all and some interesting fungi to view.
