Cairn Trip

3 November 2024

The van left Pukahu at 6:30 with eight trampers, after it’s pickup point in Taradale we were a full van of twelve. For some, it would be their first time up to the top of the highest point in the Kaweka Range, Kaweka J. For others, perhaps, while not so much of a novelty but a good tradition of remembering Armistace Day and the HTC trampers/ soldiers who lost their lives during WWII by laying a wreath at the Memorial Cairn .

We arrived at the Makahu Saddle Carpark after 9 am and entered the area with the need to don rainwear and hats with light snow falling. This was somewhat surprising as snow was not mentioned in any of the weather forecasts we had been watching! One member was happy to stay behind while the rest of us set off to the first meet up point, Dominie Biv.

At about 9:20 am, we made our way to the Makahu track. While on the ascent, there was sometimes very gentle snow falling and  the low cloud gently accumulating and receding. Making our way on the incline was a good way to not feel overly cold, for some, a hat or gloves needed to come off but were close at hand if needed. We all made a stop within or around Dominie Biv and briefly met up again with the independant party and their dog (who had it’s own backpack). Upon departing the biv for the last part of the ascent, Alan made the call to not go further and it was agreed that he would wait in the biv for our return.

All members of the party intent on the destination to the memorial cairn succeeded by or before a little after 11 am. A brief ceremony ensued which included the laying of the wreath and a poem read. Photos were taken of the group and there was little intention of prolonging our time up there as it was a chilly 0 degrees C. Thus, we departed for a cautious journey down to the biv, had lunch and then made for a descent back to the van. Soon enough, we were ready to embark on what would be a very generous afternoon tea at Pam’s.

At Pam’s old country homestead, we found a spot near or around the kitchen table laiden with oh so many treats, including the not to be missed chocolate coated strawberries. Maureen, Fred and Liz had come early and thankfully helped Pam with this generous event. Good conversations were had and we came away knowing a bit more about long tailed bats amoungst other interesting topics.

Party: Alan P, Anne B, Anton D, Carsten W, Christine S, Jude H, Lou C, Nic W, Murry A, Robyn W, Simon W, Stephen B.
